About the SEC

Matt Welch was first licensed in March 2004 as KB1LCS. He upgraded to General and received a vanity callsign W8DEC in June 2009. He is an experienced veteran of amateur radio field operations, National Traffic System,and emergency disaster communications. He was the first District Emergency Coordinator for Ohio ARES Tenth District from 2007 to 2012. He's been appointed as the Ohio Section Emergency Coordinator since January 2012. He volunteers for many public service events every year including the Pan Ohio Hope Ride and MS150 Pedal to the Point. He has been an amateur radio volunteer for the 4th largest US marathon (9th in the world), Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC. He was also a radio operator at Hurricane Katrina in 2005 while on active duty as a US Navy Corpsman. He enjoys contesting and digital sound card modes. If you can't find Matt on the air, more than likely he's working full-time at Cleveland's own Amateur Electronic Supply.

His extensive military career includes serving as a corpsman at the naval submarine base hospital in Groton, CT and aboard the USS Cape St George CG-71 in Norfolk, VA. He then transferred to the CT Army National Guard as a medic (91W then, now 68W). When he moved back to his home state of Ohio toward the end of 2006, he transferred to the Army Reserve component IRR. He received an honorable discharge in March 2012.

In Scouting, he joined Troop 68 in Painesville, Ohio in 1990. As a youth, he’s been on Trading Post B staff at the 1997 BSA National Jamboree, staff for 1997 / 1998 Camp Stigwandish summer camp, and been to Florida Sea Base. His highest rank in Scouting was Life Scout. He is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. As an adult, he’s served as Assistant Scoutmaster and Cubmaster. He is also a current counselor for many merit badges.
